An emergent culture of street-based pop-up studios utilising basic photography equipment and smart phones is taking over erstwhile dormant Sunday afternoons on Nairobi's streets. With largely youthful photographers setting up shop randomly to capture an even larger youthful clientele that stream into the CBD for portraits, ranging from family to fashion to dance videos for budding artists or private T accounts. They have taken advantage of a government decision in 2022 to lift restrictions on photography in the CBD, with police officers now keeping an eye out for would-be equipment thieves -- and no longer moving photographers on.
